US and China Reach Framework Deal on TikTok

According to Reuters, the arrangement is expected to be confirmed during a phone call on September 19 between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, faces a September 17 deadline to divest its U.S. operations. He noted that the deadline may be extended by up to 90 days to finalize terms, adding that the agreement would preserve cultural elements of TikTok important to Chinese negotiators.

When asked whether China would still retain any stake in the company, President Trump told reporters: “We have not decided yet. I will discuss this directly with President Xi Jinping on September 19 to confirm.”

This marks the second time in 2025 that both sides have signaled progress toward a TikTok deal. A previous announcement in March failed to materialize.
